About this item
A nicely carved, early 19th century, wooden knitting sheath. This shape of knitting sheath is known as the goose wing shape. They were held under the arm and a knitting needle was put into the hole in the end. The other knitting needle was held in the hand and this enabled you to knit with one hand whilst stirring the cooking pot, or doing other chores, with the other hand.
This example is well carved with geometric designs and it is in very good condition. The wood has a lovely dark patina. It is probably from the North of England and it dates from c.1820.
