About this item
LARGE STAFFORDSHIRE BLACK TRANSFERWARE WASH BOWL BASIN
TUSCAN ROSE PATTERN
John and William Ridgway Potteries
Staffordshire, England
1814 - 1837
This very large outstanding deep bowl measures 13 1/4 " in diameter x 4 1/2 “ tall and ready for use or display. It is crisply transfer printed in a dark black with a pearlware glaze. As good as I have seen.
The piece has a wonderful scalloped rim and a border pattern of a multitude of oversized flowers cascading into the well. The central image is of a large bouquet in a baroque scrolled basket and trellis of over scaled flowers with a magnificent Butterfly flitting overhead.
The wash basin displays beautifully and is in great shape. A couple of glaze chips along the bottom base and a small line to the underside center. Pieces in this wonderful pattern don't come along often, and the contrast and composition is especially beautiful in this rich black color and large size.
