An Ebonised Aesthetic Movement Side Antique Chair In Colefax & Fowler Embroidered Fabric

One of a pair, this beautiful, Aesthetic Movement, ebonised, side chair, from around 1880, has been reupholstered in a magnificent, embroidered, grey-mauve fabric by Colefax & Fowler and hand-finished with Houlès, Paris trim. It would be a gorgeous addition to any bedroom or dressing-room.

Professionally restored in our workshop by our skilled craftspeople, the chair stands elegantly on turned legs and features refined detailing on the back.

Hours of work were taken to restore this piece. The seat has been re-webbed and has fresh hessian, horsehair (hand-secured with bridle ties), cotton felt and FR cotton calico. The wood has been cleaned and then traditionally waxed and buffed to a beautiful sheen.

Spanning from 1860 to 1900, the Aesthetic Movement rejoiced in the concept of ‘Art for Art’s Sake’. Proponents of Aestheticism rejected the ugliness of the Industrial Age and instead crafted pieces that concentrated on the beauty of an object above all else.

It was the writer and critic Walter Hamilton who first named the movement, on his publishing of ‘The Aesthetic Movement in England’ in 1882.
